Marcian "Ted" Hoff, A Microprocessor PioneerHistory
When Ted was 12, he got interested in electronics to a popular science subscription he received from his uncle. He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1958, Then received a National Science Foundation Fellowship to attend Stanford University where he gained his MS and PhD in 1959 and 1962. In 1968, he got a job at Intel as the twelfth employee.InventionIn 1969, Nippon Calculating Machine Company approached Intel and told them they wanted 12 different different chips for their Busicom 141-PF calculators, each for one process.Ted had another idea though, he envisioned all of those chips on one, a sort of "Universal chip". Fredrick Faggin started the design team on it including Tim and Stanley Mazor a new employee who wrote the programming for the chip. Together, they came up with a design to put the chip on a single piece of silicon. It was proven to be just as powerful as ENAIC (which took up an entire room) despite it's insanely small size. After realizing the potential of the chip, Intel bought it back from Nippon, and called it the "Intel 4004". Links:Intel PBS Wiki Comp. Wiki BBC
